Our Website Design Process

Step 1 - The Brief

We will ask the right questions to uncover the truth about why you need a new website and exactly what it is you're trying to achieve. Some of these questions may seem a little uncomfortable. In fact, if it doesn't get a little awkward, then chances are we haven't done our job.

Step 2 - The Sitemap

Once we have all the information we need, we will build a visual sitemap. This is so everyone can get on the same page very quickly about what it is we're trying to communicate and the best way to structure the information.

Step 3 - The Prototype

Now instead of trying to tell you what we intend to build and hoping you will understand our jargon, we will build an interactive prototype in the browser to show you how our solution will work. With no attention to design at this stage, it will not be pretty, but it gets us close real quick.

Step 4 - The Design

The fun begins during the design stage because we get to play with the crayons and coloring pencils to bring your interactive prototype to life to match your brand identity.

Step 5 - The Delivery

Finally, we go underground for a couple of weeks and make sure everything is plugged in and tested before deploying your shiny new website to your hosting server so you can show it off to the whole world.

Website Care Plans

When your website is important to your business, then you need to keep it performing at its best – not only after it’s been built or had a re-design.

Website FAQ's

We primarily design on WordPress but occasionally we design websites on Squarespace.

Content is essential and we need to review everything that will be used in this project before we get started. This includes all of your text, photos, products, pages, and anything that will be used as part of the project.

If the content is not of high enough quality, such as poorly worded pages and low-quality photos/images, then we will advise that the content is created to an appropriate standard.

If you are unable to create this content, we have a network of photographers and copywriters that we can recommend to do this for you.

The project will not begin until we receive all required content and it is organized clearly. Please note, we do not provide stock photography unless it is agreed upon in the project contract.

Logo & Brand Guidelines
We strongly believe in a consistent and coherent brand that extends through all business interactions. To achieve this, it’s important that we have access to your established brand identity before we start working.

If you pay your deposit to secure your spot but do not gather your content and/or do not commit to having your content ready to go, you will be bumped to our next available calendar spot and could be charged a rescheduling fee.

Website hosting is a service that allows you to have your website on the Internet - think of it like land or space where your website lives. If you are getting a Squarespace website they provide their own hosting plans. If you are getting a WordPress website we recommend SiteGround because they offer 24/7 round-the-clock top-rated support and maintain fast load times.

You will need to purchase a hosting plan or provide us with details of your current hosting plan so we can build your website. We are happy to help you through the process but ultimately, it is your choice where you host your website.

No. For hosting, you will need to purchase a hosting plan separately. If you are getting a SquareSpace website, we recommend their Business Plan, hosting is secured at the end of the process. If you are getting a WordPress website, we recommend SiteGround*.

For domains, you will need to purchase your own domain name and provide us with permissions to access your account. We recommend purchasing your domain name from Google as they are one of the most affordable and reliable providers out there. We do recommend you link your domain name to a business account.

Rooted Design is not responsible for server downtime, software issues, or any other compatibility issue that may arise after the launch of your site from your hosting or domain provider.

*Is an affiliate link.

We can upload up to 5 blog posts and 15 products if included in the site design and discussed earlier. If you need more formatted, the work will be quoted on an hourly basis.

Payments are broken into three parts:

  1. 50% non-refundable deposit that needs to be paid to secure your spot on our calendar
  2. 30% once design and functionality have been finalized
  3. 20% prior to launch

No. All payments are nonrefundable as it is our way of securing your spot on our calendar. We book projects several months in advance, and scheduling ensures we give all of our clients the proper amount of time to properly build a website. As a result, we turn clients away for your reserved calendar spot. If you back out of the project, you may leave an empty spot that could have been given to another project. Your initial payment ensures that you are serious about moving forward with your project.

If for some reason you are not happy after three rounds of designs (which very rarely happens), we will continue the design process at my current hourly rate.

To help avoid this situation we go through an in-depth questionnaire and briefing process to make sure we are on the same page, so 99% of the time 2 design rounds are plenty!

No, we are not able to write your website copy. Although if you feel like you need help with your copy, we can factor a copywriter into your contract.

No, we do not take photos for your website. We are happy to refer you to photographers in your area and we can also suggest great places to find stock photos.

Each website project timeline has been thoughtfully created to give us enough time to go through our process. However, there are some circumstances in which your site may be able to be turned around quickly if the situation allows. If you need to rush your project, please let us know and we can either launch your website in phases or find a solution that allows us to rush the full project for a fee.

Something we are very passionate about is providing ongoing results and benefits to our clients - this is the key goal of our business and our website care plans are designed to do just that.

Each website care plan includes different specifics so please refer to your plan details to know what is included.

Yes, in most cases this is advisable. We usually book about four weeks in advance, so we would recommend getting in touch with us as soon as you decide to start a website project. It also allows you more time to prepare your website content, so you are ready to go by your project start date.

Included in all of our website packages is basic SEO set up to optimize your website to the best of our ability. Writing for SEO is not included and is best done by your copywriting professional. If you require additional, specific, or ongoing SEO services we would recommend getting in touch with an SEO expert who can give you specialist help.

In the traditional web design process, there are sometimes wire-frames involved, but for our process, they aren’t needed so we go straight to on-platform design. This gives you a full idea of how your website will work with working buttons, images, and a responsive layout (instead of flat wireframe).
